Shell Center seeks initiative proposals from faculty

FROM RICE NEWS STAFF REPORTS

The Shell Center for Sustainability (SCS) is requesting faculty proposals for funds to support new course initiatives in sustainability. These unique initiatives would address the SCS’s concerns about a sustainable future. Funding for initiatives will normally be a one-time commitment, although request for ongoing support for components of existing courses will also be considered.

The courses should concentrate on energy supply and its efficient use, air quality, water quality, biodiversity-forestry, climate change or urban sustainability, including issues such as congestion, social cohesion, flooding, subsidence and access to green space.

The courses should also address priorities such as:

  • Expanding or altering knowledge related to threats to sustainability arising in one or more of the six categories listed above.

  • Addressing how public policies might influence private-sector decisions to make them more compatible with sustainable development.

  • Demonstrating how new scientific understanding or new technology can reduce threats to sustainability arising in one or more of the six categories listed above.

  • Demonstrating how the initiative may fit into a wider sustainability education program.

  • The SCS will allocate up to $6,000 in fiscal year 2008-2009 to each new initiative.
Proposals must be submitted to the SCS by 5 p.m. May 5. Address proposals to Lilibeth André, associate director of the Shell Center for Sustainability, MS 27, or send them by e-mail to lilibeth.andre@rice.edu.

For further information, contact André at 713-348-2796.
