7/17/2008 Fulbright scholarship winner Jonah Shaver heads to France to expand nanotechnology research
Jonah Shaver, who in May earned his Ph.D. from Rice in applied physics, has been awarded a J. William Fulbright Scholarship to conduct postdoctoral research in the Brahim Lounis and Laurent Cognet research group at the Centre de Physique Moleculaire Optique et Hertzienne of Bordeaux University in France. The scholarship is for a one-year term, beginning in September. Shaver’s future adviser at Bordeaux University, Professor Laurent Cognet, was a 2006 Fulbright Visiting Scholar at Rice's Department of Chemistry for one year in the laboratory of Professor Bruce Weisman. Shaver’s Fulbright project, "Temperature Dependent Time-Resolved Magneto-Photoluminescence of Individual Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes," will investigate the temperature and magnetic-field dependence of continuous-wave and time-resolved photoluminescence of individual carbon nanotubes.Jonah Shaver earned his bachelor's degree in physics from Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio, in 2002. At Rice, he spent the first few years of the applied physics Ph.D. program working under the advisement of the nanotech pioneer and Nobel laureate Richard Smalley on time-dependent Raman and photoluminescence of single-walled carbon nanotube oxidative reactions. He later joined the research group of Professor Junichiro Kono, specializing in carbon nanotube photoluminescence and absorption spectroscopy in high magnetic fields. His thesis was titled “High Field Magneto-Optical Spectroscopy of Semiconducting Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes.” Through his research with the Kono group, Jonah has traveled to Humboldt Universität zu Berlin, Germany; Laboratoire National des Champs Magnétique Pulsés in Toulouse, France; the University of Tokyo; Los Alamos National Lab; and the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory in Tallahassee, Fla., to conduct collaborative research on high magnetic-field absorption and photoluminescence. The U.S. Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs sponsors the Fulbright Program, America’s flagship international educational exchange program. Shaver is one of approximately 800 U.S. faculty and professionals who will travel abroad through the Fulbright Scholar Program. Recipients of Fulbright awards are selected on the basis of academic or professional achievement, as well as demonstrated leadership potential in their fields. |
