Astronaut Mike Massimino thrilled a nearly full McMurtry Auditorium with his adventures in space at the Dean's Undergraduate Lecture Series Sept. 30. Massimino, an adjunct professor of mechanical engineering and materials science at Rice, took two spacewalks in May on the final servicing mission to the Hubble Space Telescope and came back with souvenirs, one a Rice-branded placard and the other a Rice T-shirt, signed by his colleagues and students, that he took to Hubble and back. Massimino's entertaining talk included pictures and video from the mission, including his series of interviews with crewmates. The talk will be available for viewing at http://webcast.rice.edu/.
Astronaut Capt. Mark E. Kelly will be on campus tonight to meet with students and present "Knowledge is Infinite: The Mystery of Space" along with Massimo Robberto, staff scientist at the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore and Thomas Hanson, team lead for space shuttle training at the Johnson Space Center. The space trio will meet with students from 5:30 to 6 p.m. in Herzstein Physics Lounge (next to the amphitheater). Refreshments will be served from 6 to 6:30, and the formal program will begin at 6:30. The event is presented by Crossroads Cultural Center Houston in collaboration with Rice's Department of Physics and Astronomy and the Rice Space Institute.
