David Melville
02 has been named the new director of the Rice University
Emergency Medical Service (REMS), the student-volunteer-run
emergency response organization on campus.
Melville has
been a volunteer emergency medical technician with REMS
for
2 1/2 years and served as its captain for a year and a half
prior to his promotion.
The job duties
are not new to Melville, who has been handling the directors
responsibilities since Noah Reiter 00 resigned Sept.
22 to take a position with the Houston Fire Department.
Ive
been filling the responsibilities of the position since
last September, so I have a firm handle on what we need
to do, Melville said.
Rice University
Police Department Chief Bill Taylor, who offered the job
to Melville, said he was the most obvious candidate for
the position.
First off,
he had been in a leadership role for 2 1/2 years,
Taylor said. The main emphasis of the position is
special because its a student program. He was the
most qualified.
However, Melville
will be at Rice only until August, when he will head off
to medical school in Dallas.
Both Melville
and Taylor said they will work together to find a replacement
who has experience working with a university-based EMS program.
Rice (EMS)
is unique, Melville said. It requires someone
with special talents and someone who is very eager to work
with volunteers and students in a close-knit community,
someone who can work with students and the administration
with a great deal of ease.
Even after he
has finished medical school, Melville said he looks forward
to possibly continuing his relationship with REMS, perhaps
as a reference resource for the program.
The entire
experience has been extremely positive, he said. Its
afforded me an opportunity I never thought would have been
available to an undergraduate student.
