OUTREACH EFFORTS EARN TAPIA NATIONAL RECOGNITION
From visiting classrooms to hosting parties at his home, Rice professor
Richard Tapia spends hours recruiting and retaining underrepresented minority
students in math and science fields. His outreach to minorities, his engaging
teaching style and his research achievements have resulted in two national
honors during the past week.
President Clinton nominated Tapia to the National Science Board, the
governing body of the National Science Foundation. Tapia was named Engineer of
the Year by Hispanic Engineer Magazine.
Tapia is available to discuss the need for outreach in math and science
education, the successes he has seen in minority recruitment and retention, and
what he believes the future holds for minorities in the math and sciences. To
schedule an interview, contact Lia Unrau, science editor in the Rice University
News Office, at 831-4793, or at unrau@rice.edu.
Tapia is the Noah Harding Professor of Computational and Applied Mathematics.
Also, the media is invited to attend a reception for Tapia on Monday, Aug.
12, at 3 p.m. in the Founder's Room, Lovett Hall.
