Rice President Malcolm Gillis along with other
university representatives honored faculty and staff for
years of service ranging from five to 45 years during a
luncheon ceremony.
About 250 Rice employees attended the annual service
and retirement awards banquet held March 12 in the Grand
Hall of the Rice Memorial Center.
"Members of this elite group have chosen to give Rice
the best and the most productive years of their lives. I
know of no higher compliments than the words
`professional' and `sensible,'" Gillis said.
Katherine Drew, professor of history, and Raymond
Martin, a scientific instrument maker in Chemical
Engineering, each received recognition for 45 years of
service to Rice.
Drew entered Rice in 1940 at the age of 16 and has
since remained closely linked to the university. She has
written numerous articles on legal and social history and
has published five books.
Martin came to Rice in 1950 as a machinist. Since that
time he has seen many changes at Rice including new
buildings and the spread of computers.
Martin machined aluminum parts for the first computer
built at Rice in the late 50s. He later was involved in
machining parts for an artificial heart. Recently, Martin
built a device used by Riki Kobayashi, adjunct professor
of chemical engineering, to study how gas and water
combine to form an icy mixture.
"I look back on it, I would not change," Martin said,
who plans to retire in July. "(Working at Rice) has been a
real education."
Participants in the event were honored for five, 10,
15, 20, 25, 30, 35 and 45 years of service. Retirees were
also honored.
