Search tips
The basic search
Type in a few descriptive words and press the Enter key or click the "Search" button for a list of relevant results that will appear in reverse chronological order.
A search for a portion of a word will return all items that include the string of letters in your query in the order entered. For example, a search for the word "quad" could return "quadrangle" as well as "squadron" or "Equador."
Narrow the search to a specific time frame by selecting the appropriate dates in the "From" and "To" drop-down lists. The default setting searches from January 1, 1995, to the present.
The default setting for "Topic" searches both news releases and articles that appeared in the Rice News. Narrow the search by selecting News Releases to search only releases issued during the specified time period. Select Rice News to search only stories that appeared in the faculty and staff newspaper during the time period specified.
Cutlines and photo captions are not indexed and will not be included in the search results.
Automatic "and" queries
By default, this search engine only returns pages that include all of your search terms. It is not necessary to include "and" between terms. For example, to search for items about Rice University's football stadium, enter:
Rice Stadium
Results will yield items that include both the words "Rice" and "stadium."
Phrase searches
To search for specific phrases, such as "Rice Stadium," add quotation marks. Words enclosed in double quotes (" ") appear together in all returned documents.
"OR" searches
To retrieve pages that include either word A or word B, use an uppercase "OR" between terms. For example, to search for articles written by either B.J. Almond or Jade Boyd, enter:
Almond OR Boyd
Does capitalization matter?
The searches are not case sensitive. All letters, regardless of how you enter them, are understood as lower case. For example, searches for "rice university," "Rice University" and "Rice university" all return the same results.
